5 New Habits for a Happy New Year!

January 22, 2019 | by Remel London

This is a little bit late but HAPPY NEW YEAR! Lol

I don’t know about you, but I’ve got a good feeling about 2019!

I’m not going to say 2019 is my year though, as I think we are all capable of having a great year ahead!

I’ve had this conversation a few times and 2018 really did feel like the foundation year for a lot of us. A year of challenges, trying something different and learning from experiences.

So I’ve entered into this new year with a whole new mindset and I’m on the pursuit of happiness.

I’ve already started to put this into practice by kick-starting the year with some new habits which I am happy to share!

So here are my

5 New habits for a Happy New Year!

1) CLEAN UP AND CLEAR IT OUT!

Last year I really let my room get out of hand. I was treating it like a dumping ground.

Shoes were everywhere, clothes were flung on the floor, chairs and falling out of my wardrobes and there was just so much clutter dumbed on my bed, I literally had a ¼ to sleep on and that was it!

It got depressing to the point where I didn’t really want to spend time at home.

As a freelancer, I can be at home a lot from time to time, so I need to be comfortable in my own space.

So to kick start the year I had a major clear out!

I bought additional shoe cupboards and a new chest of drawers to get some more organisation in my room.

I threw out years worth of junk that my mum had FORCED me to hoard since I was a child, which I clearly don’t need and gave away 4-5 Ikea sized bags of clothes, shoes and accessories to Oxfam and Cancer Research charity shops! I’ll be honest it was hard parting with some bits, but I need the space. I was holding on to clothes that either didn’t fit, I don’t wear or I BRAVELY decided I don’t need anymore.

Now I can see my floor and I honestly feel so much more comfortable in my own space!

It’s true what they say – A clean home makes space for a clear mind! I’ve taken time to chill out, plan the next few months ahead and get creative.

Give it a try!

2) START A GRATITUDE DIARY!

As I said 2018 was a foundation year to help set up a lot of opportunities that are coming my way for 2019 and beyond.

I feel like my faith in God has also grown as well. At the start of last year, I prayed for Change. I didn’t know what I was praying for at the time, but I wasn’t content with how my life was going.

And BOY did that change come! I’ve seen a lot of what I prayed for last year come to fruition so I am very grateful!

I’ve listened to Oprah speak a lot about keeping a gratitude journal on her Super Soul Sunday’s podcast, so I’ve decided to give it a try. It honestly does what it says on the tin! It’s gratifying to look back each day on your achievements. Even the small things like, reminding yourself you completed a task can really help you feel good and get you ready to smash a new set of goals in the new day!

3) LOOK AFTER YOUR BODY!

This may sound obvious, but it’s really important that you look after your body!

Towards the end of last, I was so ill! In the space of 3 weeks, I had a chest infection, food poisoning and then the flu!

I’ve also failed to give a blood donation twice in 6 months, due to my iron count being low.

This year I’ve decided I need to take care of my body as much as possible by working out, eating right, getting regular check-ups and even pampering myself!

  • I use MyFitnessPal to track what I eat, to keep on top of my weight and it helps me avoid snacking!
  • I work out 3-4 times a week with a coach/PT at Mile End Track or by doing work outs and running near my house to keep my fitness up. It’s also a great way to stay motivated, running can really help you clear your head and lift your spirits!
  • I’ve recently been obsessed with groupon and I recently visited an Osteopath to check out my body’s movement and for a back crack… it was amazing loool And I’ve got a full body swedish massage on the way! Sometimes you have to treat yourself!

4) TRY SOMETHING NEW!

There are two things I mentioned in the last point that lead to this!

1. I’m obsessed with Groupon and 2. I like to work out quite a bit. So I’ve decided to try new ways to keep fit.

It can be very repetitive doing the same work-outs or going for the same local runs. So I’ve been browsing through Groupon looking for new ways to keep fit, to set myself some new goals and new challenges.

Last week I went to a Clip N Climb Climbercise session, which is basically a circuit class with wall climbing involved! I’ve never been climbing before so it was a lot of fun and the circuit worked my body in a very different way. It only cost me £11.95 and I’ve got a voucher to go back and try it with a friend! HOLLA IF YOU WANT TO ROLL!

I’m hoping to try some new training skills so also HOLLA if you have any suggestions!

5) BOOK YOURSELF A HOLIDAY!!!

This may sound silly, but I realised how easily the year can pass you without you taking time out for yourself!

I was very happy to reach some milestones in my career by taking my first booking abroad in August to Norway working with Shell! This then turned into two more trips to The beautiful Hague also with Shell and Barcelona to host a conference.

Although I was abroad, I was working and it’s a very different thing, and I really regretted not taking a holiday where I could really rest, have time off, enjoy myself and explore a little more.

So this year I’ve already booked my first trip! I’m off to LA, a destination I’ve wanted to go to for years so I’m really excited about exploring and hopefully living the dream! Lol

I plan on making some more trips for my Birthday and later in the year to some hot countries as I’m definitely due a melanin top up! But honestly, I think the most important thing about booking holidays, is having something to look forward! It makes working hard and staying motivated that bit more worth it!

Well, I hope these tips have inspired you to set some new goals and some new habits for the new year! Despite January feeling like it’s taking months to come to an end, I’m positive that we’re all going to have a happy 2019 and smash every single goal!
